Come and spend the day with us in the small village of Llareggub in the company of its inhabitants. At the start of the story we are admitted into their sleeping, and their dreams and most intimate thoughts are laid open to us. Then the village awakes, and we see the characters busy themselves about their daily round, always mindful of their loves and hates; their desires and their regrets: Captain Cat reliving his voyages and his conquests, Mrs. Ogmore-Pritchard, nag, who dictates her incessant orders to both her deceased husbands, the two Mrs. Dai Breads, the houswife and the gypsy, Organ Morgan obsessed with his music, Mr. Waldo, obsessed with women, poor Polly Garter who can never forget her lost love - these are just a few figures from the sampler of humanity that is Llareggub. Dylan Thomas explained that this play was conceived in response to the bombing of Hiroshima, as a means to reaffirm the beauty of the world. Under Milk Wood is indeed a celebration of beauty, but also of community, of love, of language (and love of language) - and, above all, of life.
